Heading into Autumn with The Apollos...

Finally, 2016’s summer wedding season is drawing to a close. We’ve been all over the country playing some of Scotland’s most beautiful wedding venues. Here’s a quick recap of what we’ve been up to for the past couple of months!

July kicked off with us going back to school when we played the graduation ball for Edinburgh Napier’s music students at the Voodoo Rooms. It was lovely to see some familiar faces from when we were in University together, and refreshing to look back on all that’s happened since our graduation.

That weekend, we were off to Dalhousie Castle for John and Abi’s wedding. We love this venue for its stunning scenery and friendly staff. John and Abi chose Luther Van Dross’s ‘Never Too Much’ for their first dance – we cannot express how much fun that song was to learn and perform! It’s proved to be a favourite at weddings since. Thank you to Abi’s mum for giving me one of her commemorative bags for the day!

We then hit the road the next day to Aberdeen for Sean and Katie’s wedding. They kicked off their wedding with a Grand March, skilfully called by the venue’s staff. We’ve never seen so many people attempt a ceilidh before – no broken bones, luckily! Sean and Katie treated their guests to an amazing fireworks display and a fun photobooth. There was never a dull moment!

We played a wedding closer to home the next weekend at Orocco Pier – an elegant and scenic restaurant in South Queensferry. We couldn’t get over the magnificent views from this place, as well as the guests’ energetic Indian dancing!

Next up was Mr & Mrs Freeman’s big day at Greenock Town Hall. A gorgeous first dance choice for this wedding – ‘Lucky’ by Colbie Caillat and Jason Mraz. It gave John and I the chance to try out our duet skills again! We’ve also never had chips and curry sauce at a buffet before, but it was actually a refreshing change from your classic bacon/sausage roll.

The following weekend, we had another long drive up to Nairn for Megan and Talis’s wedding at the Newton A Bespoke Hotel. The staff at this venue and the guests were absolutely wonderful. Megan and Talis were even lovely enough to book us a B&B!

August was just around the corner, and we all knew what that meant… the Edinburgh Fringe had arrived! We kicked off our month by playing Finnegans Wake on the first Friday of the festival. This gave us a chance to debut a few newer songs before our showcase in Glasgow on Tuesday. Thanks to everyone who came down to both! You can check out the video of our showcase performance below.

We had one of our favourite first dance requests from Chris and Rhona, who had their reception at the elegant Dumfries House. As always, the staff were amazingly accommodating and the marquee there is a vision! ‘Only Love’ by Ben Howard was a perfect choice, and it was a joy to perform.

Bruce and Wendy had a great reception at Kinnettles Castle. We’d never seen a black and white tiled dance floor before! The couple had some very lovely words about us after the party was over:

Our next showcase will be at the Classic Grand in Glasgow on the 25th October at 7pm. We’ll be first to go on, so get there early if you want to check us out! Make sure to give us a like on Facebook or follow us on Twitter to keep up to date with what we’re up to!

If you've had us play at your big day, why not leave us some feedback on Music For Scotland's website or give us a review on Facebook?
